Maschio Angioino (Angevin Keep)

HISTORICAL OUTLINE

The castle was originally built by Charles of Anjou in 1279, who fulfilled the defensive needs of the city and gave it an edifice worthy of a capital city. To do this, he commissioned Italian and foreign artists and achitects, such as Pierre de Chaul who participated in most of the project. During Robert of Anjou's Reign, famous artists, such as Giotto and Boccaccio were guests at the castle. The current appearance of Maschio Angioino is from the 15th Century, when it was rebuilt by King Alfonso V of Aragona, following a project by G. Sagrera.
